An ex-Jean-Joseph Clio Super1600 at the start!

A few years ago, Pierre-Julien Kaufmann made a name for himself with his speed, particularly behind the wheel of the Renault Twingo R1 and R2. With Valérie Lemineur on his right, here he is again behind the wheel of a legendary Renault, an impressive Clio Super1600….

With this car, the regional driver is also sure to be one of the attractions of this first Rally 4 Passion. This Renault Clio Super1600 comes from Italy and was followed in Namur by Benoît Blaise’s team. It made its debut in the World Rally Championship at Rally Catalunya 2004.

For the occasion, it gets an emblematic livery: that of official Renault Sport driver Simon Jean-Joseph in the 2004 French Rally Championship, exactly 20 years ago! That year, Simon had a double programme, France and Europe. As part of this programme, he was also present in Ypres, but in a different livery, a combination of his main partner’s blue and yellow.

Een paar jaar geleden maakte Pierre-Julien Kaufmann naam met zijn snelheid, met name achter het stuur van de Renault Twingo R1 en R2. Met Valérie Lemineur rechts van hem, zit hij hier weer achter het stuur van een legendarische Renault, een indrukwekkende Clio Super1600…

Met deze auto wordt de regionale rijder zeker ook een van de attracties van deze eerste Rally 4 Passion. Deze Renault Clio Super1600 komt uit Italië en werd in Namen gevolgd door het team van Benoît Blaise. Hij maakte zijn debuut in het Wereldkampioenschap Rally tijdens Rally Catalunya 2004.

Voor de gelegenheid krijgt hij een emblematische kleurstelling: die van de officiële Renault Sport-coureur Simon Jean-Joseph in het Franse rallykampioenschap van 2004, precies 20 jaar geleden! Dat jaar had Simon een dubbel programma, Frankrijk en Europa. Als onderdeel van dit programma was hij ook aanwezig in Ieper, maar in een andere kleurstelling, een combinatie van het blauw en geel van zijn belangrijkste partner.

Voici quelques années, Pierre-Julien Kaufmann s’était fait remarquer par sa pointe de vitesse au volant de Renault Twingo R1 et R2 notamment. Avec Valérie Lemineur à sa droite, le voici de retour au volant d’une Renault mythique, une impressionnante Clio Super1600…

Avec cette voiture, le régional de l’étape sera assurément aussi l’une des attractions de ce premier Rally 4 Passion. En provenance d’Italie et suivie à Namur par l’équipe de Benoît Blaise, cette Renault Clio Super1600 a entamé sa carrière en Championnat du Monde des Rallyes, au Rally Catalunya 2004.

Pour l’occasion, elle disposera d’une livrée emblématique : celle qui était utilisée par le pilote officiel Renault Sport Simon Jean-Joseph en Championnat de France 2004, voici précisément 20 ans ! Cette année-là, Simon disposait d’un double programme, France et Europe. Dans ce cadre, il était également présent à Ypres, mais avec une autre livrée, mêlant le bleu et le jaune de son partenaire principal.

Grégoire Munster: “My aim? To enjoy myself and to entertain the crowd!”

Grégoire Munster will be present at Rally 4 Passion at the wheel of a Ford Escort RS Cosworth Gr.A, the livery of which will be revealed very soon. In the meantime, he answered our questions…

What does this Ford Escort Cosworth Gr. A mean to you? Do you have memories of this car?

I was not yet born when this car raced at the highest level (ed.: Grégoire was born in December 1998), but the images that I have are the passages of François Delecour or Bruno Thiry, with of course his unfortunate retirement in Corsica as well. Rally 4 Passion will therefore be an ideal opportunity to see what Gr. A-cars from back then were able to, and give the fans some fun. We are here first and foremost to provide some entertainment!

Teaming up with Bruno Thiry, a Ford factory driver 30 years ago, is also a nice nod to rally history.

Definitely. Together with Freddy Loix and Patrick Snijers, Bruno Thiry is one of those drivers who have left their mark on Belgian rally history. And I am looking forward to forming a team with him, and we are both wearing Ford colours as well. That will be fun.

You will not have the company of your usual co-driver Louis Louka.

No, that is right. Because it is a ‘fun’ rally, this was an ideal opportunity to finally drive together with my best friend Raphaël Lekeu – who follows me at almost every rally. Craig Breen, for example, also had the habit of driving with his best friends at historic rallies where there was no competition stress. I look forward to share this experience with Raphaël.

Grégoire Munster: “Het doel? Mezelf en het publiek amuseren!”

Grégoire Munster zal aanwezig zijn tijdens Rally 4 Passion aan het stuur van een Ford Escort RS Cosworth Gr.A, waarvan de livery binnenkort wordt onthuld. In de tussentijd beantwoordt hij onze vragen…

Wat betekent deze Ford Escort Cosworth Gr.A voor jou? Heb je eigenlijk herinneringen aan deze auto?

Ik was uiteraard nog niet geboren toen deze auto op het hoogste niveau reed (red.: Grégoire is geboren in december 1998), maar de beelden die ik me voor de geest kan halen zijn de passages van François Delecour of Bruno Thiry, met uiteraard ook zijn ongelukkige opgave in Corsica. Rally 4 Passion wordt dus een ideale gelegenheid om te zien tot wat die Gr. A’s van toen in staat waren. En vooral ook om het publiek plezier te bezorgen. Want we zijn er uiteraard in de eerste plaats om de show te verzorgen!

Team vormen met Bruno Thiry, die 30 jaar geleden fabrieksrijder was voor Ford, is ook een mooie knipoog.

Zeker en vast. Samen met Freddy Loix en Patrick Snijers is Bruno Thiry één van die rijders die duidelijk hun stempel hebben gedrukt op de Belgische rallygeschiedenis. En ik er echt naar uit om samen met hem een team te vormen, en we staan allebei in Ford-kleuren bovendien. Dat wordt echt plezant.

Tijdens deze rally krijg je voor één keer niet het gezelschap van je gebruikelijke co Louis Louka.

Neen, dat klopt. Omdat het een ‘plezier’-rally is, waar fun het belangrijkste doel is, was dit een ideale gelegenheid om eindelijk eens samen met mijn beste vriend Raphaël Lekeu – die me zowat bij elke wedstrijd volgt – een rally te rijden. Craig Breen had bijvoorbeeld ook de gewoonte om bij historic wedstrijden waar er geen competitiestress was met zijn beste vrienden te rijden. Ook hier kijk ik er naar uit om deze ervaring met Raphaël te delen.

Grégoire Munster : « Objectif : se régaler et faire plaisir au public ! »

Grégoire Munster sera présent au Rally 4 Passion au volant d’une Ford Escort RS Cosworth Gr.A dont la livrée sera très bientôt dévoilée. En attendant, il a répondu à nos questions…

Que représente pour toi cette Ford Escort Cosworth Gr.A ? En as-tu d’ailleurs déjà le moindre souvenir ?

Je n’étais évidemment pas né quand elle roulait au plus haut niveau (NDLR : Grégoire est né en décembre 1998), mais les images qui me viennent tout de suite à l’esprit sont les passages de François Delecour à son volant ou de Bruno Thiry, avec évidemment son malheureux abandon au Tour de Corse. Le Rally 4 Passion sera donc l’occasion idéale pour voir ce qu’étaient ces Gr.A de l’époque. Et surtout de faire plaisir au public. Car nous serons là avant tout pour le show évidemment !

Faire équipe avec Bruno Thiry, devenu pilote officiel Ford voici 30 ans, c’est aussi un chouette clin d’œil.

Tout à fait. Avec Freddy Loix et Patrick Snijers, Bruno Thiry fait partie de ces pilotes qui ont marqué durablement l’histoire du rallye en Belgique. Et je me réjouis vraiment de faire équipe avec lui, avec chacun une combinaison Ford. Ce sera vraiment sympa.

Pour ce rallye, tu ne seras pas secondé par ton copilote habituel, Louis Louka.

Non, en effet. Comme il s’agit vraiment d’un rallye « plaisir », axé sur le fun, l’occasion était idéale pour enfin disputer un rallye avec mon meilleur ami, Raphaël Lekeu, qui me suit sur quasi tous les rallyes. Craig Breen par exemple avait aussi l’habitude de rouler avec ses meilleurs amis lors des épreuves historiques qu’il disputait sans le stress de la compétition. Là aussi, je me réjouis de partager cette expérience avec lui.

And a first Super1600…

Gr.B’s, Gr.A’s, Gr.4’s, Gr.2’s… And now a Super1600, the first we’re bringing you for Rally 4 Passion. And it won’t be the only one at the start of the event!

This Super1600 is the Citroën Saxo of Nicolas Colyns and Nicolas Pierson, a car with a high-performance, melodious kit car engine which has already been seen in BRC events, and which is followed by the ‘wizard’ Michel Targez.

Its livery is that of Sven Haaf’s Saxo Super1600, which entered the JWRC championship in 2002 with the support of Citroën Deutschland.

En een eerste Super1600…

Gr.B’s, Gr.As, Gr.4’s, Gr.2’s… En nu een Super1600, de eerste die we je brengen voor Rally 4 Passion. En het zal niet de enige zijn aan de start van het evenement!

Deze Super1600 is de Citroën Saxo van Nicolas Colyns en Nicolas Pierson, een auto met een hoogperformante, melodieuze kitcarmotor die al gezien is in BRC-wedstrijden, en die gevolgd wordt door de ‘tovenaar’ Michel Targez.

De kleurstelling is die van de Saxo Super1600 van Sven Haaf, die in 2002 deelnam aan het JWRC-kampioenschap met de steun van Citroën Deutschland.

Et une première Super1600…

Des Gr.B, des Gr.A, des Gr.4, des Gr.2… Et maintenant une Super1600, la première que nous vous présentons en vue du Rally 4 Passion. Et qui ne sera pas la seule au départ de l’événement !

Cette Super1600, c’est la Citroën Saxo de Nicolas Colyns et Nicolas Pierson, une monture dotée d’une mécanique kit car performante et mélodieuse déjà vue notamment dans des épreuves du BRC, et suivie par le « sorcier » Michel Targez.

Sa livrée, c’est celle de la Saxo Super1600 de Sven Haaf qui avait entamé en 2002 le championnat JWRC avec le soutien de Citroën Deutschland.

An ex-Thiry Ford Escort RS Cosworth Gr.A for…

… Nicolas Mativa. While we wait to discover the livery of the Ford Escort RS Cosworth Gr.A that Bruno Thiry will be driving at Rally 4 Passion, here’s the one that Nicolas Mativa, owner of this very fine Cosworth Gr.A, will be entering at the first Huy-Namur Rallye Festival.

Everyone knows the livery of this replica. In 1996, the Spanish oil company Repsol was the title sponsor of the official Ford team in the World Rally Championship, which included Madrid-born Carlos Sainz.

Competing in seven world events with the official team, Bruno Thiry finished the season strongly, claiming back-to-back podium finishes at Sanremo and Catalunya. The 1996 Sanremo livery is the one worn by Nicolas Mativa and Jérémie Tomballe’s Escort RS Cosworth Gr.A!
